I. Gladiator:
Introduction:
Gladiator, originally known as Ougon no Shiro ("Golden Castle") in Japan, is an arcade video game developed by Allumer and published by Taito in 1986.It was succeeded by a sequel titled Blandia. Home versions of the game were released under the title "Great Gurianos" for ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64; the Spectrum version deliberately presented a challenging experience.
The player takes control of a gladiator/knight named Great Gurianos, navigating through a castle environment. The joystick's movement guides the character left and right, while also allowing the player to raise and lower the shield. The game employs three buttons for executing high, medium, and low sword attacks with Great Gurianos. Gladiator comprises four levels, and completing them leads to a fifth stage known as the "Treasure Place."
The gameplay alternates between two modes: the "obstacle" mode has Great Gurianos advancing while fending off bats, fireballs, arrows, shuriken, and other airborne threats using his sword and shield. This mode transitions to the "fight" mode, pitting Great Gurianos against another knight in similar armor. Successful strikes from the opponent result in pieces of Gurianos's armor falling off (helmet for high hits, breastplate for middle hits, and leggings for low hits), and subsequent hits to the same area lead to defeat. In the obstacle phases, the character can create a temporary force field by rapidly moving the shield up and down, providing protection against incoming weapons and bats. During combat phases, Great Gurianos can temporarily become invincible, indicated by a golden flashing appearance.
